The City of Burlington is seeking a Director to lead the Inspections Division within Development Services.  The next director will be engaged, knowledgeable, technology savvy, an outstanding communicator, willing to support staff by personally conducting inspections when needed and have a track record of leading with a customer service focus that effectively serves all internal departments in the City as well as works to meet City economic development goals while maintaining excellence in protecting the health, safety, and welfare of Burlington's employees and residents.   

Reporting to the Assistant City Manager – Development Services, the Director of Inspections plans, manages and oversees the activities and operations of the Inspections Department which handles the inspections of new and renovation construction projects, and conducts inspections of electrical, plumbing and mechanical (e.g. HVAC, refrigeration, etc.) systems in addition to other relevant items.  This position supervises an office manager, one lead inspector, five trade inspectors and one permit specialist and is responsible for a budget of $750,000.  The new Director of Inspections must have outstanding technical knowledge and skills relevant to the interpretation and enforcement of codes and laws, have a core value of delivering excellent customer service both internally and externally, and hold high standards of accountability for self and others related to consistent education, application and communication of codes and decisions. Qualifications:  Minimum requirements: Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field; supplemented by five years of building inspections experience at the supervisory level or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A NC Building Inspector (Level III) or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment is required. Level I, Level II or Level III certifications in electrical, plumbing, and mechanical are preferred.  The selected candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a valid class C North Carolina driver’s license.   Expected hiring range is $70,000 to $90,000 depending on qualifications.  The City offers a comprehensive benefits package including a defined benefit retirement plan and supplemental 401k program. Burlington residency is not required; however, given the nature of the work, residing in close proximity to the City limits is desirable.
