The Town of Deerfield is seeking applicants for a full-time Assistant Parks & Recreation Director to support and work with the Parks and Recreation Director to plan, organize, direct and facilitate recreational activities for all age groups.  The successful candidate must have the ability to work independently with attention to detail; possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and be self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities.  The candidate must have a flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary; the candidate must be physically able to perform all activities related to program preparation and facilitation.

The candidate must have strong administrative proficiency and good organizational ability. The ideal candidate will be diplomatic and comfortable interacting with internal staff as well as residents.  Experience in a municipal recreation program is highly desirable.  


Assists the Director with organization, supervision, and evaluation of all sports, events, and recreational program offerings
Actively researches new programming possibilities and constantly assesses the needs of current programs
Channels creativity to expand and develop current parks and recreation offerings
General field maintenance in preparation for sports and events
Effectively communicates with recreation staff and other appropriate parties to execute daily program plans
Plays an active role in assisting the Parks and Recreation Secretary with needs of daily needs of Summer Camp and Afterschool Program
Promotes programs through the town website, social media, physical marketing tools, and by advocating via word of mouth
Solicits and manages sponsorships, donations, volunteer help, and paid officials as needed
Fills in to referee for different sports as needed
Facilitates certain programs in the role of coach (i.e. Pre-K and Kindergarten Soccer Program)
Attends monthly Recreation Commission meetings
Always presents him or herself in a manner that reflects positively on the Parks and Recreation Department and the Town of Deerfield
Mentors Afterschool Program and Summer Camp Staff
Enforces all parks and recreation policies and holds all of those reporting to his or her position accountable for adhering to them
Other duties as directed by the Director

Minimum Qualifications:

      Graduation from  an accredited College or University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Leisure Arts, Parks and Recreation Administration or related field; and some experience in supervising recreational activities; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the job.

Work Hours:

Office hours are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm with flexibility to meet department and programming demands as needed.
